District Board Meeting The Moccasin Creek Service District Board will meet Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Johnston County Agricultural Building located at 2736 NC Highway 210, Smithfield, NC. The meeting is open to the public.

Turkey Shoot at Barbourtown Church Barbourtown Church of God is having their 3rd Annual Turkey Shoot every Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. through Nov. 28. All are welcome! For more information call Jill DeWitt at 938-1247. Barbourtown Church of God is located at 502 Zack’s Mill Road in Benson.

TRINITY Sunday Morning Celebration Every week beginning Oct. 18 @ The Kids' Clubhouse , Coats Commercial Drive in Cleveland (behind the new Dollar General). 9:30 a.m. FamJam Kid-appropriate worship and creative/interactive teaching. It's for children in grades K - 5 to experience with their whole family. 10 a.m. Worship Dress is casual. Music is guitar and vocals driven. Dave's preaching is Biblical, relevant, and fresh. He'll share his life and challenge you to follow Jesus with yours. (As always, we'll have great coffee and refreshments that you can enjoy through the morning including at worship.) 10 a.m. Kids' Play The staff of the Kids' Clubhouse will help us to provide a safe and fun environment for supervised play. New Winter Hours at the Ava Gardner Museum Starting Sunday, Nov. 1 the Ava Gardner Museum will begin its Winter Hours by being closed on Sundays. This winter schedule will continue through Sunday, February 28, 2010. During these four months, the Museum will continue to be open Monday through Saturday, 9a.m. - 5 p.m. In March 2010, the Museum will resume regular business hours and the Ava Gardner Museum will be open seven days a week, Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm. The Ava Gardner Museum is located in downtown Smithfield, at 325 E. Market Street and more information may be found on the museum website, www.avagardner.org or by calling 919-934-5830. The museum is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm with admission of $6.00 adults, $5.00 seniors and groups and $4.00 children.

Turkey Shoot at Elizabeth United Elizabeth United Methodist Church will hold our annual Turkey Shoot on Nov. 7, 14, and 21, beginning at 7 p.m. each evening. This is a family friendly event. This popular event promises to be better than ever, as new lighting has been installed to brighten the firing range. The cost is $4 per shot, or 6 shots for $20, for a chance to win a turkey. No, we do not shoot turkeys, we shoot at targets for chances to win turkeys! The ladies of the church will be selling refreshments. The church is located at 4269 Cleveland Rd., between Smithfield and the Cleveland community.

Tots and Tales The next Tots and Tales will be held Nov. 12 and 13. Tots and Tales is a literacy program for families with young children featuring special guest readers from the community. Golf Tournament The 2009 Cleveland Wildcats Golf Classic will be held on Friday, Nov. 13 at Reedy Creek Golf Course. The day will begin at 11 a.m. with registration, followed by a 12 p.m. Shotgun start. A catered dinner will round out the day at 5 p.m. Players may enter individually or as a team. Sponsors are also being accepted. Entries must be mailed in by Nov. 6, but team entries will be accepted up to the tournament date provided there is room. American Legion BBQ Fundraiser postponed The American Legion Post 116 in Fuquay-Varina has postponed our Chicken or Pork BBQ, originally scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, until further notice. Turkey and Ham Shoots at Clyde’s Chapel Clyde’s Chapel Baptist Church near Archer Lodge will hold a series of turkey and ham shoots starting Nov. 13-14. The hours are 7-8:30 each night. A ladies shoot and a youth shoot are included. The cost is $5 per shot. Concessions will be available. Other dates are Nov. 20-21, Nov. 27-28 and Dec. 4-5. Proceeds will go to the church’s Relay for Life team and World Changers youth mission project. Live Music on Nov. 14 Local musician Jason Carroll, formerly of the band Wyde Open, will be performing live music - acoustic at Capriccio 42 on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 6 to 11 p.m. Carroll will be playing country and classic rock, including covers from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Allen and more. Upcoming classes at Johnston Health

Breastfeeding class Want to learn about the advantages of breastfeeding your baby? New parents are invited to a class from 6:30 till 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the Johnston Health Medical Mall auditorium. The fee is $30 per couple. CPR class

Want to learn CPR or need to re-certify? A beginner’s class will be from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Nov. 18 in room 1404B of the medical mall. A re-certification class will be from 1 till 4 p.m. on Nov. 11 in room 1404B. To register, call 938-7736. The fee for each class is $71 and includes materials.

Diabetes class

Want to learn how to better manage your diabetes? A class for outpatients will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 24 in room 1404B of the medical mall. Participants must have orders from their doctors to attend and must contact the hospital’s scheduling department for an appointment. Insurance will be filed.

Offering support If you’ve lost a loved one or have been diagnosed with diabetes, you can find information and encouragement from others in support groups. A grief support group will meet from 6 till 7 p.m. on Nov. 24 in room 1404A of the medical mall. A diabetes support group will meet from 6 till 8 p.m. on Nov. 17 in rooms 1404A and B. The events are free.

Food Drive at Schneider Chiropractic Schneider Chiropractic is now collecting items for their annual Thanksgiving food drive. The community is encouraged to donate non-perishable food items at the office, located at 81 Glen Road in Cleveland. All food will go to the Food Bank of NC and benefit local needy families. Items are being collected through Nov. 18. For more information, call 661-2225.

Soup Outreach The Calvary Clayton Fellowship will be hosting a Soup Outreach at 421 East 2nd Street Clayton on Friday, Nov. 20 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 8 a.m. – noon. They will be serving homemade chicken soup and handing out gently used blankets, coats, hats, and gloves. All are welcome.

Republican Women meeting on Nov. 21 The Johnston County Republican Women will meet on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Golden Corral on N Bright Leaf Boulevard in Smithfield at 9 a.m. The Club will hold elections for 2010 Officers. Craft and Vendor Fair Join the Fellowship Baptist Church, 1701 Bud Lipscomb Rd., Willow Spring, for the Second Annual Craft and Vendor Show, Saturday, Nov. 21, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be more than 30 local vendors , as well as blue grass music, a silent auction, face painting for the kids, and the FBC Children’s Choir. Upward Basketball & Cheerleading Raleigh First Church of the Nazarene, Garner, NC, is registering now through Nov. 22 for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. Thanksgiving Food Drive The Sons of American Legion Post 116 in Fuquay-Varina will again be sponsoring the collection of can and dried food goods for the local Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry. The intent of the Pantry is to distribute emergency supplies to those in need in and around the Fuquay-Varina area. The collection will run through Friday, Nov. 20. Once again the Recreation Room at Post 116 at 6400 Johnson Pond Rd. in Fuquay-Varina will be used as the drop off area.

Dec. 2 meeting of Cleveland Counts postponed There will not be a meeting of the Cleveland Counts!, township public meeting regarding the future plans of Cleveland Township on Dec. 2 at Golden Corral. Given the volume of fact finding there is to do, and with a desire to present factual information that will take longer to assemble than we planned, we are postponing the scheduled meeting. Canned Food Drive Keep Johnston County Beautiful, Inc. will host its 6th Annual Festival of Trees from Dec. 3 through Dec. 9 at the Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield. This year’s special feature will be a Canned Food Drive throughout the week where visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item. Food collection bins will be located at the North and South entrances of the Medical Mall. Keep Johnston County Beautiful, Inc. will sponsor a “Food Tree” where food items may also be placed for collection. The Canned Food Drive will be a “Gift to the County” from Keep Johnston County Beautiful to alleviate hunger for Johnston County families during the holiday season.
